Batter Up!

070

The last time I was up in New York, Roger (Will’s uncle) took me to a baseball game. It was the first Major League game I’d seen. I got to watch the Yankees cream the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.

As a first timer, here were my impressions.

The thing that surprised me the most? Not as many baseballs got hit as I thought there would be. But I guess as the hitters and the pitchers are all professional grade, that’s gonna to happen.

Some of the most spectacular saves occur in the stands. I marveled to Roger about the crazy, over the chair dives I witnessed. He was less impressed. He told me a few people had died falling over ledges reaching for balls. One guy had died, not from leaning, but from someone landing on him. I glanced back to see if we were in danger of falling fans, but figured they’d have to get a running jump for us to worry.

However, when the balls ARE hit – man, they can fly.

We had to be about three or four stories up. Once, a ball soared higher than our position in the stands. So high in fact, I had time to ponder the following. Huh, I wonder if that’s going to land in our area… Yep, definitely heading our way… I wonder if it would hurt to catch a ball going that fast and falling from that height… Could I even catch it?

I’d put my hands up, but the ball soared through my fingers and landed directly behind me. Four guys were already mid jump before it hit the ground. Roger was disappointed I didn’t join the fray and score myself a ball.

It was enjoyable to be among the fans. It’s a social event and the energy of the crowd was palatable. Whether I was sitting in the stands, or walking around the concessions, there was a sense of camaraderie. People chatting and laughing everywhere. I saw two strangers hug jovially after they both rallied the crowd to chant.

The jumbo screen plays a part in rallying the crowd. As a people watcher, it was a source of entertainment for me. I loved both the scenes were people had no idea they were being filmed and the ones where they noticed and went absolutely wild!

There’s also appears to be an unspoken dress code. Everyone was wearing jeans and a tee shirt or jersey. The girls all had a Sporty Spice vibe. I’m sure I stuck out in my tribal skirt and purple shirt.

It’s definitely worth experiencing and I am grateful to Roger for taking me. I can’t wait to take the kids to a game someday soon.

And lastly, Roger is awesome. But if you know him, you probably already knew that.

      1. why would someone use foreign words to compliment you? Is there a story within the story. Ah, only the shadow knows
