Unexpected Visitor, a short story.

Once upon a time there was a lovely maiden who lived in a castle.

Well…  it was a town-home…  and it had been a long time since she was called a lovely maiden, but here she resided. And it was a happy home…  if not somewhat messy.

One day she decided to rearrange her abode.  Not remodel per say, but just relocate everything every which way (much to her husband’s horror).  She would later learn this was a bigger job than she had ever supposed, but that is another story entirely.

Our story begins with a room on a beautiful, breezy, south Florida day.

The room was known by its occupants as ‘the office.’  As in, “Go my child, and place this craft object in.. the office.  Do as your bid child…  you can hear me, right?”

*sigh*

Then she would calmly utter the magic words, “One. Two… (then less calmly) two and half…  My darlings, if I get to three…”

At this point, the children knew better than to test the lovely maiden, er… the lovely middle aged woah-man (a special breed of homo sapian).  Her name began with a ‘c,’ yet it is not now remembered what her full name was, since this is how she signed all her letters.  Actually, to be historically accurate, she signed her letters, “C~” and will henceforth be referred to as such.

On this lovely day, when we first meet C~, she is preparing to reorganize the office. She knows it will be a challenge. In fact, her husband the Music Man believes it’s an impossible task; one she has attempted many times before without success.  However, this time she is confident she has finally solved the puzzle.

It is a dragon she intends to slay, but again, this is not a story about the dragon and his draw.  It is a story of a most unexpected guest, as the title suggests.

Her mind was thus engaged when she caught something out of the corner of her eye. Since it was a lovely 72 degree day – the windows, and two of the doors, were open. As she moved a painting to the stairs so it could be re-purposed upstairs, she stopped and stared.

Could he really be so bold as to come right into the house? Or rather, she assumed it was a ‘he,’ with his kind it could be hard to tell.

“Yes? Can I help you?” He moved forward without a word.

The magical crystal above the door revealed his true nature.  ‘He’ shook his wings out, they caught the light, and disappeared again.  She knelt down.

Only a messenger had wings – this must be official.  She leaned in as he turned to scan the horizon, his voice barely above a whisper.  She nodded in understanding, “of course, whatever is needed.”

She smiled as he jumped up, surprised by his agility.

They shook hands, as was tradition. Then, quick as a flash, he took refuge for the night (as is accustomed).

For his troubles, she prepared a feast of bell pepper. It was rumored to be their favorite and she just happened to have the sweetest of all orange peppers within her walls. One might almost say it was fortuitous.

Tomorrow, before any of them would awakened, he’d start out on the long road home to give Them her reply. But for now he (for it was indeed a ‘he’) tasted the pepper and was thankful.

The End. For now.
